Inside the AOA Convention:
Huckabee Calls for National Focus on Health and Fitness During Opening Session

"The American Osteopathic Association's theme, ‘Fit for Life,’ addresses the fact that our real crisis in America is not a healthcare crisis—it’s a health crisis,” said former Arkansas Governor Michael Dale Huckabee in his keynote address at the opening session of the AOA 112th Annual Convention and Scientific Seminar on Monday, October 1.

“Of the $2 trillion we spend on healthcare in this country, 80% is spent on chronic disease. We have three basic behaviors that are driving most of the healthcare costs in this nation—overeating, underexercising and smoking,” he said. “Someone has said that the American health situation is a whole lot like an NFL football game—22 people on a field in desperate need of rest, 70,000 in the stands in desperate need of exercise.”

Huckabee noted that his being asked to speak on public health would have been laughable five years ago. He was significantly overweight when elected governor, and in 2003 was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He radically altered his lifestyle, lost 110 pounds and became a marathon runner. He now actively encourages healthy lifestyles and improved healthcare for all Americans. More.
