SOME CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES PUT POWER OVER PRINCIPLE

Washington (AP) Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee says some "so-called Christian leaders" haven't endorsed him because they're "more intoxicated with power than principle." In an interview with Religion and Ethics Newsweekly, Huckabee said they may have forgotten Jesus' question about what good it does a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul.

The former Arkansas governor, who's also a Southern Baptist minister, expressed frustration that some conservative Christian leaders say they agree with his principles, but don't believe he can win. He responds that he could win more easily with their support, and that standing for principle should matter more than even winning the presidency.

Huckabee says he would prefer an honest atheist to a candidate who claims to be a Christian but is ashamed to talk about it, or who suggests that faith won't influence his or her decisions.
