Who is more fiscally conservative? Huckabee!

The Politico -- Huckabee rankles some on the right, but is he the true fiscal conservative? Politico columnist Roger Simon looks at the opposition from some on the right to former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee's presidential bid. Those critics accuse him of not being committed to low taxes, a charge Huckabee disputes. Simon did some calculations and figures that judging from their ratings in the new University of Iowa Hawkeye Poll, Republican Mitt Romney has spent $1.48 million for every percentage point of support and Republican Rudy Giuliani has spent $2.34 million (Simon based those numbers on the campaigns' total spending, not just what they've invested in Iowa.) Huckabee has spent $133,000 per percentage point. "So," Simon asks, "who is the biggest fiscal conservative?"

Mike Huckabee Speaks to AOA Convention

Thanks to Dr Ramsey for this story!

Inside the AOA Convention:
Huckabee Calls for National Focus on Health and Fitness During Opening Session

"The American Osteopathic Association's theme, ‘Fit for Life,’ addresses the fact that our real crisis in America is not a healthcare crisis—it’s a health crisis,” said former Arkansas Governor Michael Dale Huckabee in his keynote address at the opening session of the AOA 112th Annual Convention and Scientific Seminar on Monday, October 1.

“Of the $2 trillion we spend on healthcare in this country, 80% is spent on chronic disease. We have three basic behaviors that are driving most of the healthcare costs in this nation—overeating, underexercising and smoking,” he said. “Someone has said that the American health situation is a whole lot like an NFL football game—22 people on a field in desperate need of rest, 70,000 in the stands in desperate need of exercise.”

Huckabee noted that his being asked to speak on public health would have been laughable five years ago. He was significantly overweight when elected governor, and in 2003 was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He radically altered his lifestyle, lost 110 pounds and became a marathon runner. He now actively encourages healthy lifestyles and improved healthcare for all Americans. More.

A Simply Delightful Article from Our Friends in the UK about Mike Huckabee

Republicans start to swing behind Mike Huckabee's Capitol offensive
Tom Baldwin in Washington for the Timesonline (United Kingdom)

Mike Huckabee, armed with little more than a bass guitar and the kind of Christian conservative authenticity that his rivals cannot buy, is elbowing his way into the 2008 Republican presidential contest.

Written off in the summer as a no-hope prospect, he has made up so much ground that what was once a four-way race between Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson and John McCain now has a fifth hard-running – if dark – horse in the field.

According to recent polls this former Arkansas Governor, who likes to fire up evening campaign events with his rock band, Capitol Offense, is tied for second place behind Mr Romney in Iowa, which kicks off the nominating on January 3. He is also showing signs of life in other key early states such as New Hampshire and South Carolina. Although most national surveys still show him trailing the likes of Mr Giuliani by a wide margin, one poll this week suggested that his support had leapt to 13 per cent – the same as that for Mr McCain and 1 per cent more than Mr Romney.

Over lunch in Washington yesterday Mr Huckabee, 51, spoke of his amazement over a “phenomenal couple of weeks” that began when he so out-shone his rivals before an audience of Evangelicals that a straw poll among those present backed him by five to one. Since then, fuelled by celebrity endorsements, he has received a desperately needed injection of cash.

The campaign was expecting yesterday to reach $1 million (£500,000) raised online this month, still not much compared with the $53.6 million spent so far by Mr Romney, but the equivalent of winning the lottery for Mr Huckabee, who had spent only $1.7 million on his presidential bid before September 30. “I now get to stay in hotels where I’m not the only guest wearing sleeves. And I get towels as part of the rate for the room, rather than having to pay extra,” he told The Times with typical, and apparently genuine, good humour.

The Spirit of Reagan: Mike Huckabee

Des Moines Register
David Yepsen
October 30, 2007

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's been the hot candidate in the Republican race since he finished second in the Iowa GOP's straw poll back in August.

Oh, there was a little time out for some chatter about Fred Thompson, but as he has fallen flat, the talk about Huckabee has resumed.

In recent days, that talk has escalated to a new level of buzz: Huckabee's doing so well in Iowa, he just might be able to win the Iowa Republican caucuses.

Wow. Conventional wisdom dictates former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's going to win Iowa. Ever since that straw poll, the buzzmeisters have slotted Huckabee to take second or third. To suggest he's going to win Iowa is taking it to a new level.

It makes Huckabee people wince. Romney's had a juggernaut in Iowa for months. He's spent millions, runs lots of TV commercials, has made a couple of hundred appearances in the state and has staff all over it, including those in a sprawling suburban office park.

Huckabee's low-budget campaign is, well, the difference between Beacon Hill and a trailer park. He's got only eight full-time staffers and runs his operation out of a low-rent storefront in downtown Des Moines. If homeless people went to caucuses, they'd have great access to Huckabee's campaign.

Like Huckabee, Romney is fond of telling people he ran and won in a Democratic state. It's also true Romney ran as a liberal on social issues such as gay rights and abortion. Had he taken the positions on those issues that he proclaims now, he never would have been elected in Massachusetts.

Huckabee, on the other hand, has been consistent, and GOP stalwarts are noticing that difference between the two men. Huckabee's rallied enough social conservatives to force Sam Brownback out of the race.

While first place is a bit of a stretch, Huckabee's in a good position to win second. His fundraising is improving, and he's going to add staff.

After Thompson's late start, he's lighting no fires in Iowa. His speech at the big Reagan Dinner Saturday night was a boilerplate thing he could have given anywhere. Romney didn't show. Huckabee got the only standing ovation.

Huckabee's success has attracted attacks from conservative groups and news organizations who criticize him for implementing a tax increase the voters also supported. Huckabee said in an interview that some of these attacks are coming from "elitist" conservatives and "ideologues."

He said "you always ought to be governing by your basic principles, but you also have to understand that government has to work." He says the attacks are evidence of his success.

"I'm a hunter," he notes. "You never point the gun at a dead carcass."

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. As we chart Huckabee's success in the 2008 contest, it is most useful now to concentrate on his message. It is a positive, inclusive, good-humored one. As Republicans seek to rebuild from their defeat of 2006 and try to stave off a similar loss in 2008, they might study the Book of Huckabee.

"I'm a conservative, but I'm not mean about it," he tells audiences. He shows up at events with minority groups. His pro-life message also encompasses health care for poor women and a concern for children. His talk about education reform includes developing creative skills through art and music.

He had fun playing the bass guitar in his band at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake - an event that attracted more than 600 people on Friday. A former Baptist pastor, Huckabee peppers his speeches with Scripture and rock-music lyrics.

Unlike some Republican presidential candidates, who grew up in well-to-do families, Huckabee tells audiences his mother grew up in a house with dirt floors, and on his father's side, he is the first male to graduate from high school. That seems to give him a populist bent - and an understanding for poor people - that isn't seen in the Ivy League conservatives.

At a time when GOP candidates are falling all over themselves to rekindle the spirit of Ronald Reagan in their party, Huckabee's coming as close as anyone.

Divided We Fall! Rally behind Mike Huckabee!

What a weekend: Huckabee Surfs in Iowa

Governor Huckabee has an incredible weekend in Iowa, where he gave a rousing performance at the Surf Ballroom and addressed the Iowa GOP at the Lincoln Reagan dinner.

Iowa Independent has a post up on the speeches at the dinner. Here's a snippet:
Fred Thompson may have gotten more laughs during his speech, but surging Mike Huckabee received the only genuine standing ovation of the night when six Republican presidential candidates spoke to attendees at the annual Reagan Dinner at Hy-Vee Hall in downtown Des Moines.

The Left fear Huckabee

This was on a blog called the "LeftWord"

Huckabee in the first tier for GOP
by Jerome Armstrong
It's time to take Mike Huckabee serious. Rasmussen is going to start adding him to their daily tracking numbers tomorrow. They released a tracking poll on Friday that showed him moving into the first tier:Giuliani 20
Thompson 19
Undecided 18
McCain 14
Huckabee 12
Romney 11
That would suggest that the GOP race is really amidst another shake-up, as the previous week's Rasmussen poll released last monday showed these results: Giuliani 25
Thompson 19
Romney 15
McCain 12
Huckabee 8
The Huckabee surge over the past 3 months has been tracked by Rasmussen going from 0 to 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7, and 8 last week. Tomorrow, Huckabee will be in double-digits and ahead of Romney nationally.

Huckabee's campaign seems much smarter than your average GOP campaign in their embrace of the web. In fact, though it's not that phenomenal platform-wise, you can see from their websiteand blog that their team understands how to engage their base of activists. Even though its theocons instead of progressives, it's simplicity reminds me of the use of the medium by Dean's campaign in '03.

Huckabee's blog has chosen Digg as their socnet platform to push content out to, has an impressive grassroots "bloggers for Huckabee" blogroll that they use the blog to grow, and has posts that are plausibly by the candidate. By all means, it appears like an online blogosphere has developed for Huckabee which the campaign is encouraging. The small-donor army of Christian donors brought into the GOP by Reagan and Robertson are what revolutionized direct-mail for the RNC in the 1980's, and it appears as though Huckabee is going to be the beneficiary of their finally becoming an internet donor force.

Here are some comments:
Democrats should fear Huckabee. He's not affiliated with any scandals, can bring the "values voters" to the polls (they'll stay home otherwise), and he really isn't a bad guy and won't be easy to demonize.

Based on the past four hours, a link from the Huckabee blog (we got one for coverage of a Republican event on Iowa Independent) is probably worth about 1,000 visits. Not quite Ron Paul numbers, but it's more than any other campaign blog that we have been linked by recently.
In contrast, about two months ago when we got linked by Huckabee's blog, it was worth little to nothing.
-- Iowa Independent

He's not scary
And that's what makes him so threatening. He's got wicked conservative credentials (well, on social issues at least), but he doesn't come across as angry. He's as conservative as a Sam Brownback, but comes across as a nice guy. He's also got a great story to tell with his weight loss, and how folks have to take responsibility...
He's certainly beatable, and I don't know that he's got the chance to move up fast enough, but he would certainly be an interesting candidate to face.

Iowa Hearts Huckabee at Reagan Dinner

From the Iowa Independent
Huckabee, Thompson Energize Crowd At Reagan Dinner
by: Jay Wagner
Sunday (10/28) at 07:30 AM [I4H editor Bolded]

Fred Thompson may have gotten more laughs during his speech, but surging Mike Huckabee received the only genuine standing ovation of the night when six Republican presidential candidates spoke to attendees at the annual Reagan Dinner at Hy-Vee Hall in downtown Des Moines.

The $100-a-plate Reagan Dinner the last of three big events leading up to the caucuses, provided a rare chance for party activists to hear six of nine presidential candidates pitch their conservative credentials.

Thompson and Huckabee were the only top-tier candidates to attend; also speaking at the event were Duncan Hunter, John Cox, Tom Tancredo, and Ron Paul. Mitt Romney, who leads polls in the state, sent his wife Ann to address the crowd. Rudy Giuliani and John McCain campaigned outside of the state.

The event is important because it draws attendees from across the state, party activists who will play strong roles in their local caucuses. "Every person in this audience is a leader in their local precinct," said Ted Sporer, chairman of the Polk County Republican Party. "These are people whose voices will be heard in their caucuses and so it's important to gain their support."
Steve Roberts, a Des Moines attorney who sits on the Republican National Committee, said Huckabee turned in the strongest performance of the night and continues to demonstrate his skills as a seasoned speaker. He said Thompson's folksy speaking style was also appealing to the crowd.

Huckabee Feels the Heat, but That's a GOOD Thing...
Posted by Karen Tumulty

If you are looking for signs that a dark horse is moving up in the presidential field, there is a more telling indicator to watch than poll numbers. It's when the opposition decides he is becoming enough of a threat to take a shot at him. That's why there was special signficance, an arrival of sorts, to Mitt Romney's seemingly offhand observation Friday in an Iowa Public Television interview that Mike Huckabee had supported "special tuition breaks to the children of illegal immigrants." It marked the first time that the GOP frontrunner in Iowa had ever singled out Huckabee for an attack.

"I must be doing well," Huckabee said Saturday morning, when I told him what Romney had said. The former Arkansas Governor had not known about the swipe. Huckabee had spent Friday night, as he put it, "rocking the stage" with his band Capitol Offense before an estimated 650 people at the fabled Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, which was the last place Buddy Holly had played before he died in a plane crash in 1959. On Saturday, Huckabee was to try his hand at pheasant hunting, a popular Iowa sport, which he considered an apt metaphor. "You never put the crosshairs on a dead carcass," Huckabee said. "Somebody sees me as a real wall mount, and that's a good thing."

The Secret Weapon: Prayer

We are in a war for the minds, hearts and future of America!

Most don't realize this is a spiritual battle.

The world is unprincipled. It's dog-eat-dog out there! The world doesn't fight fair. But we don't live or fight our battles that way—never have and never will. The tools of our trade aren't for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that entire massively corrupt culture. We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ. Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity. 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 (The Message)

Please go to this site right now and pray with my friend Jon for Mike Huckabee!

Urgent Call to Prayer and TRUTH!
It is amazing that when you appear to become a threat to what others want...how they might respond. Following last weekends' success for Governor Huckabee (Value Voters Summit, Florida GOP Presidential Debate, etc.), Mike has continued this week with a steady stream of great news and developments. He has seen his National recognition and acceptance from Voter's jump him up to double digits and into 4th place overall (even ahead of Mitt Romney). Also, he's seen an number of South Carolina leaders commit to support him and his State Campaign efforts. While all this has happened, his financial support has incredibly increased...just through the website.

However with all of this success, there are those who would like to halt or put an end to this type of momentum...and the Campaign has had to clarify the false claims against Governor Huckabee and his long record of Executive Experience.

Attention Huckabee bloggers

Let's meet in Iowa and share the victory with Mike!

Email me if you are interested, include your blog address.

I have contacted the campaign office and will have more details later.

Proof Mike Huckabee is First Tier: The attacks have begun

The Democrats fear more than anything in the world . . .(including Nuclear Holocaust, yes we can use that word for inhuman murder of people in unfathomable numbers, like 48.5 million children in the womb over three decades.). . .a republican victory. A RINO victory wouldn't be so bad but still not preferred.

And an even deeper fear that literally stops their cold bleating hearts would be a victory by Mike Huckabee whose Christian views that this nation was built on Christian principles could revert this country back to accountability, decency and, the horror, the destruction of the ruling classes of both parties.

So it's time for those opposing him on both sides of the isle to find any means any innuendo, any half truth or outright lie to discredit him.

Watch for these key words: (By the way these are sheep in wolves clothing)
"I like Mike but"
"I am a conservative Republican but"
"I would vote for Mike but he just can't win"
"He's not truly conservative"
"He raised taxes"
and a variety of other things left to the imagination.

These statements will influence some and be repeated in ignorance, but those who research will find all the old mud still has no substance.

Our friend at Huckabee Hound notes:
The Attack Dogs are Coming Out Against Huckabee
As I search the Google News results for the search query "Mike Huckabee" I am noticing a rapid increase in negative articles on the Gov., although there are plenty of positive ones too.

Now, you may think it bad news to have an increase in some negative articles, but really it's showing that Huck is gaining so fast and furiously that people simply can't ignore him anymore.

Drudge is also continuing to link to negative articles about Huck.

The attacks dogs are coming out with great ferocity because Huckabee has shown that he is a true force to be reckoned with.

But the Huckabee train isn't stopping, so either get on board or move out of the way.

Mike Huckabee, President 2008!

Let's get busy(er) send this to your friends, post it on your blog!

10 was good 12 is better: Huckabee leads Romney Nationally

Daily Presidential Tracking Poll
Friday, October 26, 2007

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows—for the first time ever--Mike Huckabee moving into the top four among those seeking the Republican Presidential Nomination.

Rudy Giuliani remains precariously atop the pack with support from 20% of Likely Republican Primary Voters nationwide. Fred Thompson is close behind at 19% while John McCain enjoys a second straight day in third place with 14% of the vote. Huckabee continues to gain ground and is just two points behind McCain at 12%. This is the first time all year that Huckabee has surpassed Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts Governor slipped another point and he is now at just 11% nationally. No other Republican attracts more than 3% support while 18% are undecided. (see recent daily numbers).

Are Christian Leaders going to follow Christians in supporting Mike Huckabee?

By Warren Cole Smith

COMMENTARY--I spent last weekend at the Family Research Council's "Values Voter Summit" in Washington, D.C. I came away believing it was a defining moment for the Mike Huckabee campaign. He was greeted like a rock star by the crowd of more than 2000. His speech was interrupted 20 times by applause, almost a dozen times by standing ovations. And he won the on-site straw poll by an overwhelming margin.

Among pro-family leaders, though, there is some hand-wringing because they worry that Huckabee - who is the candidate the followers of the pro-family movement are obviously behind - is unelectable. Pro-family leaders such as Gary Bauer and Tony Perkins would prefer to pick a winner, and be seen as the guys who made him a winner. However, they don't yet see Huckabee as a winner, so they're hanging fire.

But here are a few reasons why Huckabee could win, and why - win or lose - the pro-family leaders should back him.

First of all, in the polls, Huckabee is gaining ground. He's running as high as 11 percent in some national polls. That's now barely behind the frontrunners, and keep in mind that back in March, Huckabee wasn't even showing up in some polls, and coming in at 1 or 2 percent in others. In Iowa, he's running third, with about 13 percent.

Secondly, the frontrunners are fading, demonstrating how tentative their supporters are.Giuliani is around 28 percent, depending on the poll you trust. But back in March, Giuliani was around 40 percent. He's lost more than 10 percentage points over the past six months.Right now, Thompson is number 2 in the race, at around 18 percent, but after an initial "bounce" when he finally announced, Thompson's numbers, too, are headed south.McCain has gone from the high 20s to the low teens. Romney's numbers are erratic, but now they're not even in the teens, despite the
fact that he has spent more money than any of the Republicans. That puts Huckabee at number five, and within shouting distance of number 3.If current trends continue, he could overtake either McCain or Romney in the national polls within the next few weeks.

Thirdly, has there ever been a guy who has so closely matched the background and values of the modern evangelical? As conservative radio host and activist Rick Scarborough said, "This is the guy we've been praying for.If we don't back him, shame on us." And since we're talking religion, let's be honest: Romney's Mormonism is not the same as Kennedy's Catholicism. Most evangelicals believe Mormonism is a cult, with all sorts of weird beliefs. At a recent meeting of conservative activists in Salt Lake City, I heard a very influential Christian leader say,"Mormonism is demonic."Now, whether you believe that or not is not the point. The point is that lots of people do, and they are influential people in the evangelical world. So make no mistake, if Romney remains a front runner, you can expect a national debate on some of the strange and esoteric beliefs and practices of Mormonism.Romney will have to say either that he believes them, and thereby seem weird or cultic to many Americans, or he will have to say he doesn't believe them, and thereby seem hypocritical or cowardly and traitorous.Either way,Romney loses.

The bottom line is this:There is very little chance the Republicans will have a candidate by March, despite the fact that some activists are saying we should put our differences aside and start running against Hillary.Of course,in a few months, after the first round of primaries, there will be some winners and losers. At least one of the front runners will have to drop out of the race.Right now, my money is on McCain to make an early exit. I also predict that Duncan Hunter will drop out. He's simply not getting traction because the issues he hoped would differentiate him are being carried ably by others.

Ron Paul is in for the duration. He's raising enough money to stay in, and he seems to be enjoying the notoriety. And though he can't win, he will carry enough supporters late into the process - perhaps all the way to the convention - to play spoiler or convention broker.

Huckabee could be a major beneficiary of all of this, especially of any early re-alignments.As Huckabee starts to appear more electable,he will pick up more of the undecided voters, which right now stand at about 15 to 20 percent of the likely primary voters. They won't all break for Huckabee,of course, but he'll likely get more than his fair share.

Also, many of those who have decided will change their minds.A former Southern Baptist leader in South Carolina who had supported Romney has already withdrawn his endorsement.Indeed,Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council estimates that about 25 percent of evangelicals are supporting Giuliani, but he also said that support is "squishy."If just a few of those evangelicals move away from Giuliani, he's no longer the front runner. If they moved en masse to Huckabee, then Huckabeeis suddenly a "top-tier"candidate.

Does all of this mean that Mike Huckabee will be the next president of the United States? Of course not.But does it mean that he could get the nomination? I think he could. And if that happens, who knows what might happen next? It wouldn't be the first time an early longshot from Hope,Arkansas, has gone all the way to the White House.

So to go back to my original point: all of this poses a problem for pro-family leaders such as Gary Bauer and Tony Perkins, who have been "hanging fire."And leaders such as Lou Sheldon, Bob Jones III,and Jay Sekulow, who are supporting Romney because of pragmatism, not principle. There is some wisdom in waiting, as Bauer and Perkins are doing,to let the process work. But the Romney supporters,I fear, will be judged by history as having sold-out their Christian birthright for a mess of Mormon
porridge.

And all of them have to answer this question:If all they do is follow, then what makes them leaders?

Warren Smith is the publisher of the Evangelical Press News Service.

How well would Romney do if he couldn't use his own money?

This is something we need to think about. Romney has used $17 Million of his own money in his campaign.

The Big 10: Huckabee IS Top Tier

Mike Huckabee has reached double-digits in a new national poll from Rassmusen. The new poll still shows Giuliani in the lead but Huckabee only trails by 11 points. That's not much of a gap considering Huckabee has only a fraction the money of Giuliani and hasn't even started advertising yet. The real laugh comes from Romney's poll numbers which are back down to 12% despite huge ad buys.

Here are the full results of the poll:
Giulian - 21%
Thompson - 19%
McCain - 14%
Romney - 12%
Huckabee - 10%
Paul - 3%
Undecided - 17%

The Most Important Election in American History

It's Huckabee or Hillary
By Janet Folger

There has never been another election like this in all of our history – it is for all or nothing … literally.

We will either win everything we have worked for in the last three and a half decades or we will lose it all. Beyond losing the chance to restore protection to unborn children in our lifetime, we face losing every single pro-life law we have passed in the last 34 years. Parental notice, parental consent, the woman's right to know law, waiting periods, fetal homicide, abortion funding restrictions, partial-birth abortion bans – all gone – wiped off the books in every single state with the promised signature of Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama to the radical "Freedom of Choice Act," or FOCA.

Hope and a common touch: reasons to like Mike Huckabee

By Jonathan Alter

Newsweek Web ExclusiveUpdated: 12:25 PM ET Oct 22, 2007

The GOP is in a deep hole and keeps digging. Even after Mike Huckabee won big among attendees at last week's "Values Voters Convention," many evangelicals have been telling the former Arkansas governor—and onetime Baptist minister—that they like him but won't back him because he can't beat Hillary Clinton. They have it exactly backward. He may be the only Republican candidate with a decent chance to beat the Democrats next November.Huckabee? Yes, Huckabee.

Future Headline: Huckabee Wins! America Hearts Huckabee!

This was fun to watch!

Shame on you! Greed & pride may be the reason several Christian leaders don't support Mike Huckabee

During the last several months I have been scratching my head, trying to figure out why many of our prominent Christian leaders have been so reluctant to support the candidate they should obviously support. I have expressed my deep disappointment in them, especially Tony Perkins, Gary Bauer, Richard Land and Marc DeMoss. I now have very little respect for any of them and will never support any of the organizations they are a part of.

I think Marc Ambinder writing for The Atlantic may be on to something in this article.
"...the SoCon establishment in Washington (the men listed above as an example) fears Huckabee because Huckabee can empower social conservatives DIRECTLY, without the mediating influence, or dollars, of the SoCon establishment."

This is a long run on sentence but stay with me:
It's hard to raise money (Greed) from Christians (scared to death of what Government will do) for organizations whose purpose is to "fight for Christian moral principles" (ineffectively, after all salaries, slick brochures, modern structures and travel expenses etc are paid for) in Washington, when there is a sitting President who will fight for Christian moral principles. These organizations become less important unless they move into a supportive roll. They would have to assist the President. There's less glory. (Pride)

These men have become part of the Washington establishment which has nearly destroyed us. There is still time for them to have a change of heart. Let's hope they will before they destroy the once great institutions they lead(are paid by).

CBS News: The Nation - Huckabee a cinch to win the Election

This is a paragraph in a CBS: The Nation article recapping the Florida Debate Events.
The article was obviously not written by a person friendly to Christians or perhaps even republicans yet he saw something in our future President.

The other stunner of the weekend, both in Washington and Florida at Sunday's debate, was the sterling performance of Mike Huckabee. One of the great mysteries of this campaign has been the reluctance of Christian Right leaders to support the Arkansas governor. While they have pointed to his lack of "viability" -- read: money -- as the reason, the real source of Religious Right discomfort with the whip-smart, witty Baptist preacher unquestionably lies with Huckabee's economic populism. He is a down-the-line social conservative, to the extremity of advocating for the repeal of "no-fault" divorce. But Huckabee's governance in Arkansas has borne scant resemblance to the corporate flackery of his fellow Christian Right heavyweights -- the man raised taxes, for goodness sakes, and just won't stop talking about uplifting the working class and bringing minorities into the party. At times, he even sounds -- heaven forbid! -- pro-labor. All of which matches him up, almost to a T, with the clear majority of not only Republican, but also independent and conservative Democratic voters in the South and Midwest. These folks, black and white, tend to be social conservatives and economic populists. Huckabee is the first candidate in a long time who embodies that particular political alchemy. He is also, far and away, the most fresh and appealing political talent in the race -- on either side. He is the one Republican who would be an absolute cinch to win the general election against any of the three leading Democrats. But he remains a long shot -- unless Iowa Republicans give him a slingshot.

Another Huckabee Defining Moment

Politics: Straw poll results of the Values Voter Summit don't tell the whole story.
World Magazine Jamie Dean

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has a plea for those interested in the straw poll results of the evangelical Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. this weekend: Crunch the numbers.

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney took first place in the Family Research Council's (FRC) poll of more than 5,000 voters, but just barely: Romney won by 30 votes. But Huckabee's supporters insist that almost winning isn't the real news: They say Huckabee actually won by a landslide.

No Spin Needed; Huckabee wins debate!

Comments from the Frank Luntz focus group who were polled in real time throughout the debate on FOX News Channel:

"They need to give Mike Huckabee more time to talk."

"I was a Thompson supporter before this, but Mike Huckabee won me over."

"Mike Huckabee has good ideas, but they give him one question then they give Rudy 3 …they have to let Huckabee talk."
"Clinton was an unknown governor from Arkansas, Mike Huckabee will break through."
"These guys told me that Huckabee would win the debate and I just laughed at them. Now that I’ve heard him, I’m changing my support to Mike Huckabee."
Frank Lutz said “Mike Huckabee had a very good night at this debate - even without a lot of time to talk”.

Post Debate - Huckabee Wins again!

If you discount the thumb weary Ron Paul Lunnytarians typing in the text messaging as fast as they can, which I and all reasonable Republicans do, the winner by far was Mike Huckabee at 27% the best of the rest, less than half of that. Even with name recognition, if the candidates had even money there would be no contest.

Here's other comments:
National Review Online: After the FRC summit, he’s the social conservative choice, and if he gets the nomination, Hillary won’t know what hit her. This guy can sell ice to Eskimos. Kept his momentum, and played against his "the funny one" typecasting with his argument, "there's nothing funny about Hillary Clinton as Commander in Chief."

Townhall: Mike Huckabee is, indeed, a skilled debater. I think that he scored some points when he refused to attack the other candidates. It may be that McCain now needs to attack Romney -- or that Thompson now needs to attack Rudy. But I don't think Huckabee gains anything by going on the attack and becoming a "politician."

Washington Post: "You've just spent the last year trying to fool people about your record. I don't want you to start fooling them about mine," Arizona Sen. John McCain bluntly told Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts. The clashes, in the early moments of a 90-minute debate, prompted former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee to say he wanted no part of a "demolition derby" with others of his own party. "What I'm interested in is fighting for the American people."

Is Mike Huckabee the Next Reagan?

Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has seized on an issue―U.S. sovereignty―that could not only win him the Republican nomination for president but propel him into the White House. The conventional wisdom is that the former Arkansas governor is starting to get traction because of his views on social issues.

Chuck Norris Endorses Mike Huckabee!

Like most of you, over the summer and into the fall, I've been watching, listening, studying and praying about who could lead this country as our next president.

I won't leave you in suspense. Though Giuliani might be savvy enough to lead people, Fred Thompson wise enough to wade through the tides of politics, McCain tough enough to fight terrorism and Romney business-minded enough to grow our economy, I believe the only one who has all of the characteristics to lead America forward into the future is ex-Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Newt Gingrich called Mike "very effective … if Huckabee can find money, he will be dramatically competitive almost overnight." Bill Clinton called Huckabee the "only dark horse that's got any kind of chance … He's the best speaker they've got." There is even a pro-Huckabee swell rising among the younger generation.

Who he is (before what he can do)

More than anything he has done or can do, however, it is first who Mike is that impresses me most.

Huckabee Campaign Swimming in Good News by Another Chance for Hope

Mike Huckabee must be on cloud nine. But the joys of the present will not compare with what joys may lie ahead.

Today, October 20, 2007, marks the official end of Mike Huckabee as a second tier candidate.

What's this campaign got to be excited about?
1) Rasmussen had Mike as high as 9% nationally last week at one point. That's the highest ever, and represents his support doubling in the last 2 months. All this, and he still is trying to earn name recognition with a lot of folks.
2) A dynamic showing at the Family Research Council's Washington Briefing. Mike finished just 30 votes behind Mitt Romney, a victory largely gained through an intentional Internet voting campaign inside team Mitt. In addition, Huckabee secured a staggering 51% of the vote of onsite voters, compared to a paltry 10% for Romney. This kind of performance is likely to open the door to significant endorsements for Huckabee from prominent Evangelical leaders.
3) It's clear that Fred and McCain don't have any oomph behind their campaigns. Fred is fading fast. VERY FAST. The only thing being said about his last debate performance is that he stayed awake. McCain seems to be doing better as a candidate lately, but there's nothing he's saying that is going to earn him much support. He might pick up some of Fred's defectors, but there's no real danger of McCain winning prominent primaries according to anyone's polling. This is going to be a 3-man race: Rudy, Romney, and Huckabee.
4) Sam has bowed out. Pro-lifers who were behind him must take a hard look at Mike. He's more pro-life than any other candidate, though I must credit Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo for solid records in this area.
5) Last, and certainly not least, Huckabee is seeing fundraising gain steam. The campaign has created a new online, real-time fundraising tracker. They set a goal of $200,000 by October 31, 2007. They are on pace to blister that mark! As of tonight, fundraising will be up to over $150K for the quarter. Expect them to hit closer to $250K with their new momentum helping out big time.

Brody and Lowery: Huckabee the Victor!

Brody:
Huckabee is poised now to really take off. Why? Two words: Sam Brownback. With Brownback out of the race, many of the votes may go to Huckabee. That could translate into some marginally better poll numbers. Plus, Huckabee can claim victory here and go around the country saying that social conservatives have spoken and that he’s the guy. Romney will make that same claim but don't tell me for a second that the onsite margin differential doesn't have some in the campaign concerned. Maybe because Huckabee is financially challenged, they're not too worried.

Lowery:
Wow. Let me repeat: Wow. What an incredible communicator. His message has gotten stronger with the accent on Buchanesque nationalist/protectionist notes, and he speaks the language of these kind of voters better than anyone. I found myself getting goose-bumps near the end of his speech when he invoked a long series of Biblical underdogs, beginning with David and his five smooth stones. He made as strong a case as possible for putting all pragmatic considerations aside and going with him. And no one could mistake the shots at Romney, including a reference to candidates who have as many positions as Elvis had sizes to his waist-band. Watch out in Iowa.

Huckabee Wins Again! Can You Hear Us Now?

Although I encouraged voting online, we all know how that can be manipulated, especially when you have money(Romney) or madness (Paul). When you consider this it is a great win for Mike and disturbing that so many Christians have been fooled by Romney who once said "I will always protect a woman's right to choose."

Online Poll results

Romney 1595 27.62%

Huckabee 1565 27.15%

Paul 865 14.98%

Thompson 564 9.77%

Undecided 329 5.70%

Brownback 297 5.14%

The rest received divided the remaining 500 votes. All Democrats together received 32 votes.

The votes for Brownback probably came before his announcement or out or respect for the Senator.

At the Washington Briefing, Huckabee dominated everyone else.
Huckbee received 488 votes for an absolute majority out of the 19 candidates (Democrat and Republican) on the straw poll ballot (51.25%). Romney received 99 votes. (Several sources connected to the FRC Action Washington Briefing have said Romney brought in "around 100" people to participate and assist.

On site results gave Democrats a total of 10 votes.

Remember Hillary's quote: "I have to confess that it's crossed my mind that you could not be a Republican and a Christian." Hillary received "0" votes.

Mike Huckabee is the candidate who should have the support of Conservative Christians.

He should also have the support of our previously respected Christian Leaders.

Maybe they will wake up now.

Pray for Mike this weekend!

Gene Edward Veith, executive director of the Cranach Institute at Concordia Theological Seminary and culture editor of WORLD Magazine, regularly offers excellent insights and great discussion questions at his blog, Cranach.

A new post on Cranach, entitled Woes of the Christian Right, puzzles over why conservative Christian political activists aren’t rallying around presidential candidate Mike Huckabee – “who is not just trying to get the Christian conservative votes but is a Christian conservative himself” – instead of wringing their hands over whether to reconcile themselves to Giuliani’s social liberalism or Romney’s Mormonism and flip-flopping.

Veith writes: “The argument that he can’t win is ridiculous at the primary stage. Of course he can’t win if people who like him won’t vote for him because he can’t win. Some of the same people who think this way about Huckabee are contemplating a Third Party candidate – do they think he can win?”

Brownback should support Huckabee

I Like Sam.

Were Mike Huckabee not running Sen. Brownback would have had my full support.

Althoug his departure won't have a major impact, his endorsement of Huckabee could have a significant impact. The Strategic Vision Poll showed him pulling 4% in Iowa-which could provide valuable Iowa votes for Mike Huckabee, who has a similarly conservative ideology.

Brownback is also expected to not run for another term in the Senate in 2010, although he may run for Governor instead when Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D) is term limited, also in 2010. He might also be a good choice for a cabinet post in the Huckabee Administration.

Sam, we wish you well!

Huckabee Supporters: We are on our way to Victory!

A new Rasmussen poll now shows Mike Huckabee rising to 8% nationally. More evidence of a surge in support.

For weeks the campaign has seen a surge in website traffic and now we are seeing rising poll numbers nationally and also in key states.

What is so encouraging about our 8%, is that in spite of having only spent $1.6 million since February Mike is only 1% point behind Senator John McCain and 5% points behind Governor Mitt Romney (Governor Romney has spent a staggering $52.8 million! so far).

The first Rasmussen Reports poll of the Iowa Republican Caucus for 2008 finds former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney enjoying a six-point lead while former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee are virtually tied for second!
With your support we can do better than Governor Romney's 13%. In fact, we can win Iowa and take the momentum we would gain from a win in Iowa and go on to surprise folks in New Hampshire and South Carolina.
The key to growing our 8% into 13%, and then building our campaign into a winning margin of votes in the early states is your making the decision to financially support our campaign.

Do we really want the evangelical vote to be irrelevant?

Here is an excellent analysis of how we become insignificant by Jacques Berlierblau, Georgtown University.

Is the Evangelical Vote Irrelevant?

A whole bunch of things have gone awry for Republican White Evangelicals in the run-up to the 2008 election. First and foremost, they have been unable, inexplicably, to field an organic, homegrown, first-tier candidate of their own. This leads me to ask: why didn’t they just support (and bankroll) the affable, impeccably Evangelical (and underfunded) B-lister Mike Huckabee from the moment he threw his hat into the ring?

Second, conservative Christian leaders are clearly not all on the same page. Some have been oddly reluctant to identify their dog in this fight. Others have placed their bets on completely different contenders (e.g., Richard Land seems fond of Fred Thompson. James Dobson was reportedly enamored of Newt Gingrich. Gary Bauer backed McCain in 2000. After his victory in the Iowa straw poll Huckabee picked up a handful of endorsements from lower-level pulpit politicos).

This is related to a third problem: taking their cues from leadership the rank-and-file have been expressing their own rugged Protestant individualism. Refusing to unanimously line up behind one aspirant, they have dispersed their votes across the entire slate of GOP hopefuls. Catholics, Mormons, Episcopalians (or should I say Baptists?)—they’re open to it all! Let it never be said that these good Americans vote blindly for their own. Just ask Mike Huckabee.
Factor in that more than half a dozen Republicans are all jonesing, hard, for the Evangelical vote and you have the strange specter of a once massively influential constituency that is about to neutralize itself into electoral irrelevance.

And then there is the specter of Giuliani. A few weeks back James Dobson not so subtly suggested that he and his fellow travelers would sooner back a third-party candidate than America’s mayor. A couple of days ago, a widely circulated memo from Conservative Christian Mark DeMoss of the faith-based public relations firm The DeMoss Group, stressed that Giuliani “clearly does not share our values on so many issues” (emphasis in original).

Whereas Dobson proposes full retreat from the Republican Party, DeMoss endorses Mitt Romney. While DeMoss mentioned the truism noted above that he is more concerned that a candidate shares his values than his theology, he did not pause to explain why John McCain or Fred Thompson (whose values and theological views are also close to his) would be less viable options.

I will have more to say about Romney in future posts. At present, let me float two theories about the relevance of the Evangelical constituency in Republican party elections. When they are united, Conservative Protestants are very necessary, but not sufficient, for a victory. And when they are not united, as Rudy Giuliani is wagering, they are far less necessary.

Mr. Bauer:

You, Tony Perkins, Mark Demoss and Richard Land are seriously compromising Christian principles and values for a perceived political win. At best I think you will assure a win for Democrats.

I will not compromise.

Christians should be involved in the political process, they should have influence but my friend we do not abandon our principles to win politically. When we do, we lose, because we become what we are opposed to.

For the first time in a long time, we have a Christian man driven by principle, a man of strong character, a man who lives what he believes, a man we can trust, a man who by his very nature can restore dignity and trust of the Office of President, a man who has more experience than any other candidate, a man who is electable.

And you have turned your back on him and endangered my family.

Count the cost, my friend. You and your co-leaders failure to stand behind Mike may cost not just the election in 2008 but will cost you your leadership position with me and thousands upon thousands of others. I think you guys need to get the message:
We want Uncompromising Leadership.

I also think you and the others should apologize to Bill Clinton. Apparently Character is not the issue.

If you know Tony Perkins, Mark Demoss or Richard Land's email please send it to me.

Are you with me on this!

I have had enough of our failure as Christians to allow God to act. We have been spiraling downward for decades and we must turn society around. We can only do this by living a life of trusting God in obedience to His will and the principles of His Word.

We have all these huge Christian Institutions guiding the Christian forces against evil but we are losing our significance in the world. We have become so busy telling others how bad they are and trying to stop legislation that we didn't have time to tell them how good God is.

We change the world through changed lives.

Now to influence the powers of government our Christian leaders are now saying, we must compromise in order to (hopefully) legislate our morals back into society.

Contact every Christian leader you know and ask them to email, write or phone these men and vote for Mike at the Family Research Council site. (link below)

SOME CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES PUT POWER OVER PRINCIPLE

Washington (AP) Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee says some "so-called Christian leaders" haven't endorsed him because they're "more intoxicated with power than principle." In an interview with Religion and Ethics Newsweekly, Huckabee said they may have forgotten Jesus' question about what good it does a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul.

The former Arkansas governor, who's also a Southern Baptist minister, expressed frustration that some conservative Christian leaders say they agree with his principles, but don't believe he can win. He responds that he could win more easily with their support, and that standing for principle should matter more than even winning the presidency.

Huckabee says he would prefer an honest atheist to a candidate who claims to be a Christian but is ashamed to talk about it, or who suggests that faith won't influence his or her decisions.

See yesterdays entry for actions you can take.

Gary Bauer, Tony Perkins, Richard Land and Mark Demoss should apologize to Bill Clinton

Didn't Bill Clinton once say character is not the issue.

What did these men say then?

What are they saying now?

I think they owe Bill Clinton and the Christian Community and especially Mike Huckabee an apology.

Could Huckabee be Mr. Right?
By: Jonathan Martin Oct 14, 2007 on Politico
Mike Huckabee may be the candidate for both evangelicals and the Christian right.

Social conservatives can stop looking for their perfect presidential candidate. There is one Republican who, given his credentials, would appear the likeliest to rally evangelicals and others on the Christian right.

He is resolutely anti-abortion, supports a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and is a man of deep faith. He has been elected — and reelected — to statewide office in a Democratic-leaning state.

And he’s right under their noses: Mike Huckabee. But evangelical leaders are not flocking to their brother in Christ, as Huckabee, despite his political and personal values, remains far behind other less “pure” Republican contenders in the presidential sweepstakes.

Our Christian Leaders are not Leading

It's Still the Economy!

Steven Pearlstein of the Washington Post had this to say [about Mike Huckabee on the economics debate on CNBC the other night]:
Judged by who can offer a serious approach to economic policy, the hands-down winner in the Republican race so far is Huckabee, who combines intelligence, candor and comfortable familiarity with the issues and a practical approach anchored in solid conservative beliefs. If only the political press were as impressed with the quality of a candidate's program as with his name recognition, it would be Huckabee, not Thompson, who was energizing the Republican contest.

National polls indicate that Rudy Giuliani still leads the Republican pack. Even conservatives reluctantly have to admit that a plumber, after all, is better than the handyman who doesn’t want to come to your home, doesn’t initially have the right address and doesn’t know what to do when he finally gets there. Thompson will turn out to be the summer fling of 2007.

Yet, as disappointing as is Thompson, there is hope on the horizon for conservatives; there is a dark horse on the march--one whose mane gleams a little brighter every day, and one who, as he gallops forward from the sunny horizon, has a gleam that goes from black to sheer white. The contrast between Thompson and Huckabee could not be greater. When Huckabee spoke at the very same venue, the crowd was mesmerized and moved. He is full of energy and zeal; eager to improve an America he clearly loves.

Mike Huckabee, the former Baptist preacher and two-term governorof Arkansas, has all of the skills, attributes and credentials conservatives have been looking for. He is an avid and uncompromising proponent of life. His brave, passionate speeches against abortion have been amongst the most stirring of the campaign so far. He opposes same-sex marriage and civil unions; he supports teaching creationism in public schools. He is not packaged, stiff and artificial: he speaks with the depth of conviction of a man who has a spiritual life. He is, in essence, an authentic Christian.

GOP Presidential Hopeful Responds To Speculation About Possible Third-Party Candidate

TEXARKANA, Ark., Oct. 3, 2007(AP)

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee says talk among some conservative Christians to back a third-party candidate if the GOP nominates someone who supports abortion rights suggests that front-runners aren't connecting with the party's base.

"I think it says about the media-anointed front-runners that there's some dissatisfaction...That's why I'm in the race," Huckabee told reporters before a private fundraiser Tuesday. "If you look at some of the people who maybe have a lot of money but their ideas don't resonate with the Republican base voters, so it's not surprising."
